Diversity Initiative Finalist: Cole Schotz
What is one change you’d like to see all New Jersey firms make in order to promote diversity in the legal profession?
Every New Jersey law firm should have a dedicated DEI professional or regularly consult with a DEI professional regarding best practices to integrate a DEI lens into all aspects of law firm operations. Cole Schotz recently began providing DEI consulting services that include crafting workplace engagement surveys to gather key information and leveraging that information to assess and positively impact company culture and implement focused DEI efforts.
It is imperative that someone with DEI experience and a voice within in the organization review, evaluate, and report to stakeholders regarding matters including developing future leaders, equitable transition planning, fair promotional opportunities as well as professional opportunities for growth and development.
As lawyers often serve as managers as well, given the unique time constraints on their time, dedicated professionals and/or consultants can help guide firms in a way that DEI is a core principle of their present and future.
DEI principles are integral to how firms should approach their recruitment and retention efforts and has the potential to elevate mentorship and sponsorship in a manner that cultivates and advances firm culture and objectives. Additionally, operating with a lens that is sensitive to DEI principles can inform how law firms approach matters like hiring, promotion, and policy.
We have embraced opportunities that exhibit our commitment to DEI, including a generous billable policy that credits all firm timekeepers for advancing DEI both internal to the firm and external facing in the communities in which they serve.
